BMW System V Helmet with BlueTooth
Following the latest rage, BMW announced at the Intermot their System V integral helmet with integrated BlueTooth technology. This permits you to telephone while riding your motorcycle, conditional on your mobile phone being equipped with BlueTooth.

The new system helmet V is a step into the future not just in the sense of sporty looks and product qualities: fitted with Bluetooth technology, this folding helmet enables wireless communication between motorcyclists.

The system is not vehicle-based and bears the name WCS-1 (Wireless Communication System); it is completely integrated in the helmet and homologised for this purpose. It consists of two virtually invisible Array microphones in the forehead area, a digital signal processor (DSP) to filter interference and wind noise, a Bluetooth module, two speakers and an integrated set of batteries. On the left there is a control panel with three buttons for the functions “On/Off/Select” (this includes the “pairing” which connects the two devices and “multifunction” for connecting further devices) as well as “+” and “-“ for loud and soft).

Voices can be heard easily even at speeds of over 150 km/h, depending on the motorcycle model: the installation kit hardly weighs more than a chocolate bar (approx. 120 g) and can be used for several hours once the battery is fully charged. At the moment, mobile phones with Bluetooth capability can be connected. Later, connections for other Bluetooth devices are planned, e.g. MP3 players.

This technology is installed in the new system helmet V with an outer shell manufactured in hot press and made fibre glass, carbon and Kevlar laminate. This helmet offers excellent aeroacoustic levels. The noise level at 100 km/h is only 86 dB(A). It is thus among the quietest folding helmets on the market. In terms of aerodynamics, too, the helmet is pioneering. It is neutral in the air stream and only has mild aerodynamic resistant when the head is turned. A high level of impact damping was achieved by means of segmentation of the EPS helmet shell (expanded polystyrol) with impact resistance in eight individual segments.

The chin section can be folded up or closed with one hand due to a new mechanical system with bowden control. Air intake is simple to regulate. The visor ventilation can be closed and is operated by means of a sliding button at the chin and for head ventilation at the forehead, with two settings. At the rear head, the air stream is regulated at continuously variable levels with a slider. Ventilation openings are at negative pressure levels and thus maximise the air stream inside the helmet.

The chin strap integrated in the neck band helps prevent the helmet from turning. In the event of an accident, it remains in the best possible position and protects the head. At the chin strap covers there are so-called noise flaps which close off the helmet and keep turbulence away from the ears.

Like its predecessor, the helmet weighs only 1690 grams. It has a breathable DuPont Coolmax interior lining which can be taken out for cleaning. In addition to the three-dimensionally curved, scratch-resistant and anti-fog-layered visor the accessories also include a toned, double-panel and air visor (shortened visor) with the same properties. Jet helmet side sections as well as cheek and neck pads are available in various sizes for adaptation.

Not only are the lines of the BMW Motorrad product range reflected in the design of the helmet, the five colours are also harmonised with those of the motorcycles. The customer can choose between night black non-metallic, titanium silver metallic, manganese blue metallic, magnesium metallic matt and rock red metallising.

No prices or availability as of yet. The photo is that of the System V helmet, but by the life of me, I can't see any BlueTooth controls.

Vemar and Momo have already announced their BlueTooth helmets.

Any idea if these are still made by Schuberth? I've always bought Schuberth, they have more features than the BMW, are cheaper and are built in the same factory so... I'll wait and see if BMW offers one.

What I have not seen mentioned with this bluetooth helmets if rider to pillion. Why not?

Also... amazing this took so long to be out on the market!

    Guess so

It looks like they're still made by Schubert.

The release said that you could use the BT for Bike-to-Bike, so it can also be used for rider-to-pillion.

    Makes sense.

Oh goody goody! More distracted operators!

Just what we need... People making calls on their cell phone while flying down the highway on their motorcycle.

I think this is a horrendous product. We have enough to keep track off on the road without additional distractions. I can see people trying to dial now!

Ban the damn things before it's too late.

I spoke with a BMW rep at the Long Beach Motorcycle Show and he said that Schuberth would probably sell the helmets first and then BMW would get them. That is fine with me as the price is usually cheaper through them.

Might be able to get them through a European site before they hit the states.

In response to the "ban the damn things" - do you really have that poor a level of concentration when you ride? I've been using intercoms and bike 2 bike radio fro years without any problems, and frankly see no problems using my bluetooth phone - I never make calls, only answer them. And if you try and tell me it's different to using the intercom/radio I will laugh at you. Personally I have no difficulty talking and riding - and I know several police riders who say the same.

    I want one!

This looks awesome. For those of you who can't keep up with technology, ie wanting them banned, maybe you should ride a mule instead. Oh, but wait...then you will have to divide your attention on what the mule is doing.

    Just grow up.

Tried them at my local BMW dealer yesterday and they sound great, only drawback as far as i can see is the price 900 eu each so if you want to whistle Dixie to your loved one it's gonna cost 900 x2 = 1800 eu ..

and as for fones I ride my bike to get away from the NET or the Sprawl or whateve.

If anyone wants more info go to www.seven.com.au/sunrise click on pete's gadgets, this will show you the BMW 5 helmet, Price is RRP Helmet $850au & Bluetooth RRP $550 + fitting, to be released in Feb 2006. I ride a Harley and think it's a great idea for communicating to your pillion rider & listening to your mp3 player while riding. For those that think it's a bad idea try riding 1000klm and not talking to anyone or listening to music, so I say get a life.

I'm in Australia and have had the System 5 for a few months. It is trully excellent. My callers don't even know I'm on the bike. Helmet to helmet only works about 10-15 meters. You keep disconnecting from each other as you separate - its useless bike to bike. Rider Pillion is perfect.

You cant operate the controls through a glove at all. So make sure its on before you go.

Hanging out for being able to connect MP3 etc...

The helmet itself does not have a lot of give in the padding so don't buy too tight and expect it to give - this has been a big issue for me.

well, it appears that the System V didn't quite work out as planned. BMW has pulled it from the market in Europe. They are hoping to re-introduce in Q1-Q2 2007 after the kinks are REALLY worked out of it.

Just picked up a Schuberth S1 would like to get the bluetooth parts and install them in my S1. I like the idea of two mics would be more clear for sure. Can this be done?

I ride a Honda PS-250 Big Ruckus; but, still have two K75s bikes. The Honda is more comfortable, more fun, and much cheaper to operate (fuel and maintenance). Best ride in 40 years of riding. Equipped w/ 400 watt alternator. Powers HID Hella Rallye Compact 4000 driving light, Hella Micro DE HID fog lamp, MP-3 and XM satellite receiver over 150 watt amp w/ Poly-Planar speakers fore and aft.
